AIS Map

AIS(automatic identification system) is an identification tagging system for boats and ships and is very useful to observe vessels nearby, especially in congested area's. At the moment only larger ships must use AIS, ; so do not count solely on it for your safety.
The system is using a VHF transmission systems that carries a long distance. Typical some 20Nm for vessels themselves but coastal stations with high elevation antennas can "see" as far as 60 Nm.

Marine Traffic is part of an academic, open, community-based project. It is dedicated in collection and presenting data which are exploited in research areas such as: - Simulation of vessel movements in order to contribute to the safety of navigation and to cope with critical incidents - Design of models for the spotting of the origin of a pollution - Design of databases providing real-time information It provides free real-time information to the public, about ship movements and ports, mainly across the coast-lines of many countries around the world.
